Specifically, the Aquarium has an opening for an Aquaculture Analyst. The Aquaculture Analyst is a full-time, salaried position within the Seafood Watch department of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Conservation & Science division. The Aquaculture Analyst is responsible for assessing the sustainability of aquaculture operations in adherence with program protocols and using the Seafood Watch criteria and methodology.

Essential functions include:  

  • Compile, synthesize and analyze scientific information on various aquaculture operations including peer-reviewed journal articles, industry and government reports, and other reviews of sustainability.
  • Engage in personal contacts with aquaculture experts, government agencies, members of industry and non-governmental organizations.
  • Conduct aquaculture assessments in accordance with the Seafood Watch program research protocols. 
  • Maintain ongoing expertise on key Seafood Watch priority species and emerging issues and innovations in aquaculture.
  • Act as a spokesperson for the Seafood Watch program on aquaculture sustainability by giving talks at meetings, and participating in relevant workshops and other outreach and special events.

Required knowledge/experience: 

  • Masters degree in marine ecology, aquaculture, fisheries, or equivalent experience is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research using primary literature, databases.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge, comfort and proficiency in working with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Endnote and other software are necessary.

Specifically, the Aquarium has an opening for a Seafood Watch Senior Science Manager. The Senior Science Manager is a full-time, salaried position within the Seafood Watch department of Monterey Bay Aquarium's Conservation & Science division.  This position is responsible for the scientific integrity of the Seafood Watch program as it develops and maintains a suite of seafood recommendations for businesses and consumers.  The Senior Science Manager greatly informs the strategic direction of the program as it works to support information needs of the broader sustainable seafood community and related audiences. 

The position supervises a Science Program Manager who in turn supervises a team of research managers, scientists, and a science coordinator. The Senior Science Manager works closely with the Seafood Watch consumer outreach and business teams to ensure the seafood recommendations are credible, transparent, and relevant to audience needs.  This position also acts as a spokesperson for the Monterey Bay Aquarium on the science of sustainable seafood.

Importantly, the Senior Science Manager collaborates with external colleagues, including non-governmental organizations and governmental and external experts, on a wide range of seafood sustainability issues and initiatives including but not limited to eco-certification strengthening and fishery and aquaculture improvement projects. 

Essential Functions include:  

  • Maintain a rigorous scientific framework consistent with the conservation ethic of Monterey Bay Aquarium to evaluate the sustainability of capture fisheries and aquaculture operations.
  • Direct all aspects of the research process to develop and maintain relevant, credible, defensible and transparent seafood recommendations for consumers and businesses.
  • Contribute to eco-certification strengthening by continuing the Seafood Watch benchmarking initiative, participation in the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative, and participation in relevant technical and stakeholder advisory committees.
  • Ensure that all seafood assessments, subsequent recommendations and other relevant research meets the Program's high standards and are delivered to the consumer outreach and business teams for public distribution in an efficient and useful manner.
  • Oversee a Science Advisory Board to inform the Program's research and to refine, when necessary, the Program's scientific framework to reflect the latest science.
  • Liaise with a spectrum of stakeholders including the seafood industry, academia, governments and non-governmental organizations to inform research, share information, and remain current on sustainability and related scientific issues and initiatives.
  • Implement with rigor the External Assessment Program that enables third parties to utilize the Seafood Watch scientific framework. 
  • In collaboration with the Seafood Watch Business Team, interface with strategic businesses to advise seafood procurement and identify opportunities to engage in, and/or support credible fishery or aquaculture improvement projects and equivalent eco-certification schemes as defined by the Seafood Watch Program.
  • Participate in annual program planning, strategic planning, and reporting including quarterly reports to leadership and interim and final reports to funders and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation Board. 
  • Monitor and evaluate program objectives, tasks and projects to demonstrate success or learning against program objectives. 
  • Manage the Science Team’s annual budget.
  • Supervise the Science Program Manager and host weekly team meetings.
  • Act as a spokesperson in the media and at relevant events for Monterey Bay Aquarium on the science of sustainable seafood.

Required Knowledge/Experience

  • Advanced (post-graduate preferred) degree in Fisheries, Ecology, Marine Science, Aquaculture or other related field.
  • Five + years of experience in marine conservation or sustainable fisheries science.
  • Five + years in program management, strong program management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively negotiate.
  • Knowledge of the seafood industry and the supply chain, and fisheries and aquaculture operations.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborating with other non-governmental organizations, scientists, federal and state agencies, and members of industry.
